Most people, even those completely new to golf, know that you need to have a wedge in your golf bag. Similarly, most know the key difference between any type of wedge and a conventional iron – wedges are aimed at hitting the ball high and chipping the ball up over relatively short distances, so obviously this makes a wedge a handy – even essential – bit of kit for those times when you find yourself in the bunker, the rough or just short of the green.

That is all clearly understood, but still a wedge is not just a wedge. In fact, you can’t just say a sand wedge is a sand wedge, because the sand that is in the bunkers at the golf course where you play most of your golf can be soft or hard!
Similarly, the weather conditions you normally play in, and the amount of rainfall your area of the country has, is a factor. Warmer and drier climates will generally produce harder fairways. Rough can be cut fairly short or left long. You can’t cover every possible golf course scenario with your choice of 2 or 3 wedges in your bag, but when choosing used wedges you should consider the typical conditions you play in.
Developing strong wedge play is a crucial part of golf and mastering handling the used wedges that you choose will be instrumental in your attempt to consistently post low scores. Knowing how each strikes in different conditions is very important.
The different finishes that second hand wedges come in are worth bearing in mind. Mostly, the finish is cosmetic. However, those with a raw or ‘oil can’ finish will rust over time. As a more abrasive surface is created, more spin on the ball can occur.
Your choice of used wedges should be largely determined by the course/type of course you will play the most.
