Chances are, even if you don’t start at this point, that you will work up to the time when you have a full complement of 14 clubs in your golf bag. How you organise those 14 clubs is up to you – you choose the make-up of your bag. However, typically, you might have a driver, a fairway wood and maybe one other wood, and a putter for when you on the green. The remaining ten clubs in your bag will be used irons (including wedges). Therefore, as these are the clubs you will be calling on the most, you need to pick wisely when it comes to second hand irons.

So, what do you need when it comes to used irons? Well, a 3 iron has the lowest loft (about 20 degrees to the vertical) and is used to hit the ball low and long – the best players will hit around 200 yards. At the other end of the scale, a pitching and sand wedge have the highest lofts (above 50 degrees to the vertical). These hit the ball high, but not a great distance.

All the irons in between these: 4 iron, 5, 6, 7 and so on fill in the gaps in terms of typical distance achieved. As a general rule of thumb, there will be up to 15 yards difference between each used iron.

The lower the number of iron, the lower the loft – and the lower and further the ball will travel, when the shots played are accurate.
