The main difference between steel shafts and graphite shafts is one of weight. Graphite shafts are lighter. In theory, this means that it should be easier to swing a club quickly. This, in turn, should lead to longer distance shots being achieved.
So, it would seem that every golfer – regardless of age or ability – should be using graphite shafts, is that right?
Well, unfortunately, things aren’t quite that simple.
The drawbacks of graphite
At first glance, graphite sounds like a magic substance that will transform the quality of your golf playing. However, there are drawbacks. Firstly, there is the cost to consider. Graphite is more expensive than steel, and on a new set of irons the overall difference between a set with steel shafts and a set with graphite shafts will add a fair bit of money onto your final bill.
Another issue is inconsistency. Steel is more durable than graphite and is much less complicated to make. We have been using steel for centuries and better understand how steel works and how it reacts to different conditions. Golfers want complete consistency – and this is best achieved with decent set of steel irons.
With graphite you are unlikely to ever achieve the same sort of distance and consistency that can be depended on with steel shafted clubs.
The importance of ‘feel’
How a club feels in the hands of a player is not the be-all-and-end-all, but it is very important. Graphite is excellent at soaking up the vibration that is felt on impact with the ball. However, often a graphite shaft produces something of a dead feel. Steel, on the other hand, tends to be much crisper and more immediate.
The question marks that hang over graphite shafts in terms of flex, torque and consistency go a long way in explaining why most pro golfers steer clear of irons with graphite shafts.
Overall though, it is well worth experimenting with both so you can see for yourself which type of shaft feels the best for you.
